Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized
database containing very basic facts about servicemen who
served on both sides during the Civil War. The q initial focus
of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter
names and other basic information from 5.4 million soldier
records in the National Archives. The facts about the soldiers
are being entered from records that are indexed to many
millions of other documents about Union and Confederate Civil
War soldiers maintained by the National Archives and Records
Administration.

This database is a catalog of American Civil War (ACW)
photographs from the Special Collections Branch of USAMHI.
Usually, patrons are searching for ancestors, researching
particular ACW regiments, or looking for examples of items
worn or used by soldiers of the period. Ultimately, this
database will reflect the full range of USAMHI's photographic
collection, ranging from the periods of the Mexican War in the
1840s to recent operations such as those in Somalia and
Bosnia.
