Why
Genealogy?
There are a multitude of reasons why more and
more people are being drawn to the exciting world of genealogy
and family history. The magic of connecting yourself with
family and times long past can be intoxicating. This steadily
increasing interest in family history has been fueled, in
part, by the huge numbers of baby-boomers finding themselves
with more leisure time and from broadcast specials and movies.
One benefit of this rising tide of interest in family history
is that more and more attention is being focused on finding
and preserving old dormant records and documents. As a result,
new services and products are constantly being created and
marketed to meet the needs of inquiring researchers. For many
years The Latter Day Saints have
been doing a marvelous job microfilming vast numbers of common
and obscure records of all types. They continue to collect and
preserve records from around the world. Their holdings are
easily accessible at LDS Family History Centers located in
larger cities.
Several government agencies are also finding that their
holdings contain a vast treasure trove of genealogically rich
documents (i.e. the National Archives and Records
Administration with their World War I
Draft Cards and Civil War Pension
Applications, the Social Security Administration with
their Social Security Number
Applications, and the U.S. Department of the Interior –
Bureau of Land Management with their
Land Patent Records, just to name a few).
The use of computers with sophisticated genealogy programs has
made it easy and convenient to accumulate and organize vast
amounts of genealogical information. And, of course, the
world-wide internet has opened new doors to the world for
exciting exploration and discovery.
